Reed Canarygrass - A long lived clumpy perennial with coarse rhizomes. It grows 4 to 7 feet tall. It is used for pasture, silage, hay and erosion control. It flowers from June through July. ORCHARDGRASS

Hulled Orchardgrass - Super quality, finely cleaned - outer seed coat removed. Faster germinating, lower seed rate (1/2 as much as regular seed). Works ideally with other grasses and legumes. When seeding with alfalfa, the rate per acre should not exceed 1-1/2 lbs.. Provides more consistent seeding through drill box.

PEAS, FIELD

Seeding Rate: 120-150 lbs. per acre (Alone) or 100-120 lbs. per acre when seeded as a nurse crop.

Canadian Field Peas - The practice of using canadian field peas as an emergency forage crop is gaining popularity. The field peas are generally mixed with oats, barley, or triticale and harvested as haylage The mixture will be nearly as high as alfalfa haylage for protein content and will be higher in total energy. For maximum protein content the mix should be cut when small grain is in the boot stage. Cutting after the grain has headed out will result in more tonnage, but it will be lower in protein. These mixes are quite palatable and are well-liked by cattle. Dairy cows usually respond with good milk production. If used as a nurse crop for alfalfa, the 1st crop can be cut for haylage and the 2nd and 3rd crops can be cut for hay or haylage.

PEAS, WINTER

Hairy Vetch - There is a new emphasis on Hairy Vetch as a winter cover crop.  It has been known to add 60-70 lbs. nitrogen to the soil-should be seeded in September for fall cover crop.  Seeded alone, plant 20-30 lbs. per acre.  In mixtures, use 10-15 lbs. Hairy Vetch and 1/2 to 1 bushel small grain.  A good mixture in the spring is 15 lbs. Hairy Vetch to 1 1/2 bushel oats per acre.  Do not seed vetch in small grain to be harvested as grain.
